208 I A Mature, Spiritual, Practical Conversation on Racism with Harry Pickens

Today on Mastering Midlife:

●      The opportunity for learning and growing is endless

●      How do we hold and not turn away of the horrors of racism and history?

●      What do we do with our despair, disgust and moral outrage?

●      How does “collective trauma,” affect the conversation.

●      The danger of “let’s just move on and let the past be the past”

●      The complex reality of our founding fathers – what do we do with this?

●      Holding the paradox of reality vs fiction

●      Training our nervous system to be with the overwhelming feelings

Harry Pickens, joins us to help us find the first steps in that healing.  Our conversation walks through the practical, the spiritual and the phycological aspects of the complex issue of racism.  I left this conversation profoundly different (and yes, hopeful) then when we started.  I hope you will too.

"Maybe this time humanity will wake up to the commonality and the compassion that is inside us.”  - Harry Pickens

Harry Pickens is an award-winning performing artist, composer and educator. He is the Author of In Tune: Lessons in Life from A Life in Music.   His multifaceted musical career as a jazz pianist, has featured collaborations with hundreds of the world’s great jazz artists, and has recently performed for the Dalai Lama

Besides music, he has dedicated his research into Neuroscience to help ordinary people live extraordinary lives.  He is particularly interested in how cutting-edge research in neuroscience and psychology can inform positive social change

The United States is dealing with the “Collective Trauma” of its history.  Whether you or your ancestors were the oppressors or the oppressed, we are all effected.  Our capacity for dialog is in direct proportion to our willingness to address that trauma.  Whether it is looking, unflinchingly, at our history and the systems still in place today, or genuinely wanting to create a bridge for healing, we deal with the hurdles of our conditioning, beliefs, humanity, and ego’s in every conversation.
