048 | Stop Overcomplicating Leadership

Today on The Rising Leader:

● Why I never wanted to call myself a “leadership coach”

● How leadership becomes an intimidating job

● Solid relationships, honest conversations, listening, and other foundations of leadership

● Lowering your allostatic load, staying grounded, and doing the internal work as a leader

I recently read a review of the Rising Leader Podcast and it made me chuckle. The review explained that, although the podcast’s interview episodes are great, the solo episodes tend to be repetitive. And that’s understandable—I do repeat some of the same themes like a broken record, but for good reason. I always talk about leadership, and one reason for this is that most people tend to overcomplicate it. While I believe leadership isn’t easy—it’s really, really hard, to be honest—it’s actually fairly simple.

In this episode, I discuss why leadership—although it’s hard—is simple. I discuss my recent interview with healthcare industry executive, Geffrey Roche, and explain how books and content on online platforms such as LinkedIn overcomplicate leadership. I also outline the components of great leadership and underscore why doing internal work—through staying grounded and reducing stress—is a critical part of being a leader.

“Don't overcomplicate leadership. Have the conversations you need to have. Be as honest as you can in those conversations. If you make a mistake, admit it—fix it, right? Make amends.” - Mark J. Silverman
