050 | Giving Your Way to Success

Today on The Rising Leader:

● Katherine Hepburn: her childhood and generosity

● The role of giving in professional success

● The importance of providing value before making requests

● Balancing generosity and self-care

Sometime around the 1920s or 1930s, Katherine Hepburn and her parents were lining up to go to the circus. In front of them was a family, and when the father didn’t have enough money to buy his family’s tickets, Katherine’s dad gave him $20. Because that $20 was the money they were going to use to buy their own tickets, Katherine and her parents had to go home—but, on the drive home, they were joyful. Making that family happy gave Katherine and her parents much more than they could get from the circus. This story—about giving and the joy that comes from it—inspires me to think about how a mindset of service and giving value has helped me become successful.

In today’s episode, I recount a story from Katherine Hepburn’s childhood and discuss the significance of approaching interactions with a mindset of service, generosity, and providing value. I also underscore the importance of setting healthy boundaries and ensuring your well-being.

“In your next meeting—the next time you walk into a room full of people—change your attitude and think about how you can give, be of service, and provide value. Watch it change your career.” - Mark J. Silverman
