Today on The Rising Leader:
● Hiring and retention in today’s job market
● How remote working has impacted employee attraction and retention
● Looking at employees and their individual needs
● Why the carrots-and-sticks approach doesn’t work anymore
● Leadership skills and their impact on employee retention
I’ve recently been watching the legal drama series Suits on Netflix—to say that I’m totally into it is probably an understatement. Suits is about a high-powered law firm in New York City, where people work themselves to the floor, balls to the wall, and compete until they’ve got nothing left. The associates and new lawyers are treated like garbage and everybody’s overworked—but in crisp, snazzy suits. But while Suits may be an exciting drama series (at least, for me), it makes one wonder: does the carrot-and-sticks management approach still work in today’s job market? What are the best ways to make employees improve their performance at work while retaining them?
In this episode, I discuss the challenges of finding, attracting, and retaining the right talent in the current job market. I explain why employee engagement and happiness can no longer be a one-size-fits-all approach to employee retention. I also discuss driving employee loyalty, reveal the secret to pushing an employee’s performance without driving them out the door, and underscore how leadership is a skill you can hone and develop.
“It takes a ton of work, attention, conversations, and getting to know people. Your leadership skills are going to be your competitive edge in hiring and retention—spending time on that is the thing to do.” - Mark J. Silverman
